Tropics Staying Quiet...

June is historically a quiet month in the tropics with a storm being named once every other year. Arthur was named in late May and we probably won't see another named storm before July or August. It's certainly not because of water temperatures as the Gulf has now warmed into the mid to upper 80s. The upper level winds above 18-20,000 feet remain too strong (wind shear) for storms to form. Currently we have an unusually deep trough over the Eastern U.S. that extends down into the Gulf. Latest computer guidance indicates that trough could remain for most of this month. That's why I say "we probably won't see " another storm anytime soon...at least near us. One might form out in the Atlantic but the Gulf & NW Caribbean have too much shear right now. We would love for that to last into August & September!

So during the 2005 hurricane season the "dagger of death" didn't exist as much as the 2006, 2007, and 2008 seasons?
