Cold, then Colder, then Snow?

If you can believe tonight's model run, the low in the Gulf Sunday night will first soak us with heavy rain before turning us much colder for Monday. In fact, it is hinting some moisture could linger into the Monday PM when it could be cold enough to turn over to snow flurries. That's still 5 days away so let's see if tomorrow's runs support that solution. When I see below zero air building again over Alaska, that makes me nervous. We could see freezes on BOTH sides of the lake Tues & Wed !

In the short term, another cold front will arrive near daybreak on Friday. That cold blast Will bring a light freeze to the N-Shore on Sat. AM, but the next one on Monday will be much stronger. Stay tuned all you snow freaks. You may get your wish...but I've seen these models flip-flop before. Give me your ideas & why.

I always thought that if it was going to snow here in New Orleans it was going to be in December. The last 3 snow events have been in that month. I remember it snowing back in the early 1970's, '73 comes to mind...and I don't remember if that was a December or January snowfall. I do remember my mom calling and coming to St. Catherine's to pick me up and take me home, so I could go play in it. I thought how cool was my mom for doing this.

So my rule of thumb says it probably won't snow...but then again this is a different year with different circumstances. All of you weather enthusiasts seem to point to it as you study the models...thats just something I do not do...but I do enjoy reading all your posts and posting here. So if it does snow, I'll be out in making the best of it.

A friend of ours brought this to our attention last night and we just thought it was interesting how the years and natural disasters fell. Check it out below.

Notice the years and the pattern of natural disasters experienced by New Orleans:

1964 - Snow
1965 - Hurricane Betsy

1968 - Snow
1969 - Hurricane Camille

1991 - Snow
1992 - Andrew

2004 - Snow
2005 - Hurricane Katrina

2008 - Snow
2009 - (?)

Unbelievable! Hopefully this pattern doesn't continue!!
---------------------------------

Surely, like in the 70's we had snow and no major hurricane to follow.

Thank you.

Aaron,

It just means that it snows here more often that we get major Hurricanes.

I think we will get rain then snow flurries from our departing storm. A better scenaro would be for the low to form further south in the gulf.

Aaron,
Actually I did some research right after it snowed on the 11th of December and I realized that it has snowed 10 times since 1900, 8 out of those 10 times there was a Hurricane here the following year. I even believe I posted this on my blog on WU to show my research in December. According to this research that means there is an 80%chance will be effected by a hurricane this following season. lol

But we certainly dont need that since our levee system can barely handle a Cat.2 Storm Surge.

Also I beleve will see some flurries on monday with that wrap-around moisture.

Aaron,
It snowed in 1973 and we had Hurricane Carmen in 1974.

Actually Bob after it snowed in the winter of 1963/1964 we had Hurricane Hilda in 1964 which made landfall in Cocodrie,la as a high end Cat 3.

Let's look back since I've been here (1978-2008+). There have been many hurricanes to threaten us... Hurricane Frederic 1979, Elena & Juan 1985, Georges 1998, TS Isadore & Hurr. Lili 2002, Ivan 2004, Katrina 2005, Gustav & Ike 2008...+ others. If There is a pattern, I just don't see it. We can tie storms into El Nino or La Nina years, but not to snows in the PREVIOUS year.

PROPHET~BOY,

I really dont appreciate this exaggerated mockery of me. I dont know who you are but you are a classic definition of a web troll. And thats why I usually dont comment/blog on WU because of the vast numbers of trolls. I like comming on here to have intelligent conversations with people on this blog and enjoy it. So please dont spoil this for me.
