One month down...3 1/2 to go

We will get thru June with no named storms this year and since Louisiana has never had a November Hurricane, that leaves 3 1/2 to 4 months left. The second half of October is usually quiet for LA so that's how I come up with 3 1/2. With long range computer models showing more east coast troughs coming, we should not have to worry about storms well into July. One thing to watch is weak fronts moving down into the Gulf. Sometimes a weak circulation can develop along the front and turn into a tropical storm or hurricane (Alicia 1983). I'll be keeping a close eye on that for the next couple of days.

While one part of the country is breaking record highs, much of the Great Lakes and Northeast have been unusually chilly. New York City has had the 5th coldest June. I think many of us could enjoy some of that air. As Joe Impastato says...Fergit about it...not gonna happen until late September.

I recall a few years back, the season where we went all the way to January of the following year and started the alphabet over with named storms. Just because Louisiana hasn't had a storm in November doesn't mean it won't happen. It's scary to me when a meteorologist says we don't have to worry about storms after middle of October. I live in Mississippi and I am sure the folks in Florida wouldn't like to hear their experts saying, not to worry folks, no storms have ever come in November so the season will end early this year. One example to illustrate: "Hurricane Kate in 1985 was the last November hurricane to hit the USA, and also one of November's six major hurricanes. Kate was a Category 3 hurricane on Nov. 20 and 21 in the Gulf of Mexico, but weakened to a Category 1 storm before hitting the Florida Panhandle where it was blamed for five deaths." This was also the year of Elena. It also seems to me that people have short memories.

Geez, I've been called many things, but this is the first time for "scary". Look...since hurricanes have occurred in EVERY month, shouldn't Hurricane Season run from January to December? There's a reason for the season June thru November. It's called WINTER. The reason Louisiana and Texas don't need to worry about November storms is two fold. 1) colder Gulf Waters & 2) increasing westerly winds(Shear) that steer any storms that do make it into the Gulf eastward to Florida (Kate in '85). I am not an alarmist. I speak with knowledge & experience. If you choose to worry about Hurricanes beyond Oct. 20th (I know Juan was Oct. 26,1985), that's your choice. I just know any storm that does come then will be weak and one that we won't need to evacuate. Appreciate your comments...just don't agree with them.
