Danny Likely by Morning...

An AF hurricane hunter aircraft flew around a strong tropical wave this afternoon and found tropical storm force winds (60+ mph) but not a closed circulation. Another plane will fly out after midnight and we could see the 4th named storm of the season on Wednesday. Fortunately it will follow the track of Hurricane Bill and stay up the east coast of the U.S. staying away from the Gulf.

Locally, we continue to enjoy late September-like weather with cool nights and not too hot days. Moisture will slowly increase but rain chances will stay rather low into the weekend. Our VIPIR model brings yet another August "cool" front here during the day on Saturday. We'll look at it again tomorrow, but that would again bring in some drier & slightly cooler air for Sunday & Monday. Yippee!

And yet more alarmist news regarding Global Warming in today's USA TODAY paper. "More extreme heat waves: Global Warming's Wake Up Call". Except the "predictions" are not what reality says is going on. Just once I'd like to see the headline..." Global Warming will extend growing season. Result; more food for the World". Nah, couldn't get a government grant to study THAT.

I sure do enjoy reading your blog, Bob! Thanks for all the good info over the years.

Global warming? This is not new news. These changes started 18,000 years ago, as the earth emerged from the Pleistocene Ice Age-- a time when ice-covered mammoths and mastodons roamed the earth. People are concerned with the increasing rate of warming.

I agree with you Bob, this is more like late September weather. And if those fronts continue to drop down, I don't see any active tropical weather for the remainder of the season. Wouldn't that be great??!!! The entire U.S. could beat this season with no hurricanes!

Considering what seems to be the rate of changes occurring on the planet Earth (and this is only a history & discovery channel education), I think any consistent major weather change will take full affect long after any of us are here. Is that selfish??

I am a weather buff and really enjoy your forecasts. You not only give the forecasts but the reasoning behind them. I am 63 & lived in the river parishes all my life so I've seen a lot of weather & it fascinates me. As to global warming, I believe it has become a political religion. We have difficulty predicting next week's weather but we can predict 50 to a hundred years out & base huge public expenditures on it? I think not.

How can we predict climate 50 to 100 years out & base huge public expenditures on such predictions when we can't always predict the weather one week out? It's sheer arrogance.

Thinking back to 1965, Betsy was also heading up the east coast when she made an about-face, swung down under Miami and made a bee-line for Houma/Thibodaux. Bob, can you tell us: what caused that change in direction, was it correctly predicted 44 years ago, and could it be predicted today?

Hurricane Betsy indeed made a loop out in the Atlantic back in 1965. That was before my time in weather , but I'm sure NO ONE forecasted the loop. I remember Hurricane Elena in 1985 made a loop over the eastern Gulf and that same year Hurricane Juan made a double loop just off the Louisiana coast. Computer models cannot predict those loops. They are usually caused by lack of steering currents that leave the storm behind in areas of little air motion.
