The Great Blizzard of '78...

As Bob from Piqua, Ohio pointed out, 33 years ago today was the beginning of the great "Super Storm" of January 1978. Many cities, including Dayton had 1-2 feet of snow, 40-50+ mph winds and air temperatures of 5-10 Below Zero!!! It truly was dangerous/deadly to venture outside. I worked for WDTN-TV2 Dayton and also did radio weather on WING-AM. I issued the 1st warning on the storm at 3 PM before the National Weather Service or anyone else. It turned out to be my last snowstorm as I left Dayton in March to come to New Orleans. We don't have to shovel humidity!

After a chilly start, Thursday should be a pleasant day, if you are dressed for it. Highs should reach 55-60, 62-65 on Friday, 65-70 on Saturday and 62-65 on Sunday with a few showers Sunday PM. No real cold air is in sight for the next 7 days.

Bob who are you trying to fool? Everyone knows that only NWS meteorologists can issue weather warnings. It has no value coming from a radio station/tv meteorologist, like you. Please know what you are talking about.

Anonymous: A word to the wise. If I were traveling in my car and heard a weather warning from one of the newscasters, I would TAKE HEED. Not everyone has the ability to stay glued to the "weather channel" all day long.
More is better.......and thanks Bob for always giving everyone a heads up on impending severe weather.

Pretty much everyone knew a big storm was coming, being the first to hit the warning button is not a big deal. - Carl Day

Anonymous...technically, NWS issues the official warnings, but as broadcasters we often "warn" people of coming storms BEFORE any NWS warnings come out. The Dayton Daily News had a huge column several days later talking about how people were surprised. Look it up CAVEMAN. The NWS finally issued a Blizzard Warning that night at 10 PM. Too late for anyone to get to the store. Bob in Piqua had it right and the Dayton Newpaper confirmed it. Go look it up. Who's Carl Day CAVEMAN? A radio guy at WHIO-AM, a competitive station? An unbias source for sure!

You do a great job, Bob!! You're the only weather source our family turns to for acurate, informative weather - keep the warnings coming! :)

I believe the NWS does "warn" folks prior to issuing a Warning, its called an Advisory. Of course the media gets info out to more folks since they are on camera several times a day giving weather info but if you check NWS homepages etc you will find the exact same info but with more detail. For some reason the media feels like the NWS is their competition?

Hurricane season will be fun!

Spelling "acurate" wrong, not sure what to say about that.

"At 4:30 p.m., the Weather Service issued heavy snow warnings for northwestern Ohio and a winter storm warning for the remainder of the state.

By early Wednesday evening, the low from North Dakota was tracking directly toward Ohio. It then became obvious that a very dangerous weather situation faced Ohioans.

Forecasters issued blizzard warnings for the entire state at 9 p.m., January 25th."

Sounds like they warned much earlier that 10pm?

And even had an Advisory out much early than 3pm.

OK CAVEMAN, I was wrong by an hour. 9 PM or 10 PM...too late for folks to get out to the store. If you weren't there, you don't know what you're talking about. Advisories are issued all the time in the Winter. The Blizzard warning came out way too late. Bob in Piqua was right. He was there.

I am also from Piqua Ohio..I remember the 1978 blizzard very well.Bob Breck was the first to break in and let us know what was on the way..I watched him on a regular basis..He was and still is very accurate and gave more information on the weather nation wide and how it would affect us here in the Miami valley..He did not always agree with the "National Weather Service" I myself like the opinions and other scenarios of storms..Miss you up here for sure!
