Worst Winter Ever?

Ah C'mon now, Worst Ever? That's what The Weather Channel is saying. At least WeatherUnderground is just saying "memorable". But Worst Ever? Tells me some of TWC's folks are very young and don't remember the winters of 1977 & 78. Those were brutal winters. Or how about 1982 when Chicago dropped to -25? In this past week's "Monster Blizzard", I think O'hare dropped to -6 after the storm. After seeing all the misery & suffering of the people, I believe a colder planet is worse than a warmer planet.

We have not seen the sun for 4 days and highs have been 20-30 degrees below normal/average. Clouds will clear us for Saturday and early Sunday but the big news is we will warm back up to near 60 on Sunday. Don't get use to it as more cold fronts are coming next week with the "possibility" of some white stuff? Enjoy your weekend !

that's probably true, about them being young and all... I'm 31 and cant remember this many frequent cold snaps/snow or ice episodes in a row... Especially in the last several winters it seems its been colder than ever (at least in my memorable life-time)... Bob, you think all this has to do with fewer sunspots on the sun? I remember an article out a few years back saying because of the lack of sun spots, our winters will begin to get colder... even the possibility of a "mini" ice age... hmmm... thoughts on that one Bob?

Sure the storms of 77-78 were bad but they are nothing compared to the economical impacts of the latest winter events going on lately. Infact Chicago that is use to dealing with hard winters and big snows had to close public schools for the first time in 12 years!

Plus as you stated all the meterological records from the past are flawed with poor and inaccurate records of temps etc., so more than likely the storms of 77-78 were not all as bad as they have been made out to be.

They were not hyped at all back then. Nowadays everything is overhyped. Anonymous, I read the same thing and i think it is the most logical explanation for the climate swings along with the ocean currents. It is crazy to think we can figure out how earths climate works when we have so little true information!

Caveman, I am sure by comparisons they had just as much if not more of an economic impact because of the fact that sometimes the events were not predicted and caught people off guard AND I am sure the snow removal back the was NOTHING compared to todays methods and equipment. Also, why does it seem you are always on the attack or trying to disprove what Bob says??
Did he beat you up when you were younger? Did he steal your girlfriend in highschool? Did he get the job you applied for? Give us a break for once and post something nice. It is refreshing to have a Meteorologist who has the knowledge to give his own forecast and not repeat verbatim what the NWC reports. Lighten up or leave!

Thank you Greg for stating the obvious. As for CAVEMAN...I haven't said the past records are flawed, it's the current records. Remember in the "old" days it was mercury in glass thermometers. They were replaced by the "more accurate" thermistors or thermocouples. That's when the current warming trend began.
We're not comparing apples to apples. And to say the past storms had less economic impacts? Get real, we had no numerical guidance back then and few satellite images. We were operating without x-rays. The people didn't know it was coming 3 days in advance because technology wasn't available then. Also CAVEMAN, tell that to Jane Bryne, Mayor of Chicago back in the 2nd heaviest snowstorm in 1979. She was booted out of office because that storm shut down the city. This site is to share opinions & ideas, but make sure you have you facts correct. There wasn't the media coverage of storms back in the 60s & 70s like we have now.

What is the NWC?

Disagree, the latest snow storms had a much greater economical impact than the 77-78 snow storms and that is simply a fact. Sure those storm where big but not like the latest.

Can't wait for hurricane season!
