Tornado Chasing For The Bold & Young...

Back in the 80s I met a former helicopter pilot(Charlie Marvin) who told me that" there are old pilots & bold pilots, but no old, bold pilots."  His point was when you're "in your youth", you take greater risks.  But as you age & mature, (and get closer to death!) you reduce the amount of risk/boldness you take in an effort to continue living.  Which brings me to the hundreds who continue chasing tornadoes, including an "old" colleague Joe Bastardi, who posted these spectacular views on WeatherBell Analytics .

Joe had his son Garrett with him and the photos are terrific.  But c'mon Joey, leave the chasing to the young!  We've seen some storms bubble up during daytime heating today.

The storms are moving from west to east/NE so this is not quite a typical summertime pattern.  Summer motion is usually from the SE to the NW rotating around the Bermuda High.  Whatever, daytime heating and the old frontal boundary is causing today's storms.

Look at those 40 & 50 degree dew points to our east.  That's the good feel air.  As long as we have the surface boundary around and an upper trough over the eastern states, we should see daily rain chances.

Since we have reached summertime, unless we have an upper high over us, expect daily rain chances.  Finally...

The 2024 Hurricane Season begins this Saturday and I will post a review of the Tropics daily even when nothing is happening.  A number of weak waves (yellow dashes) are moving to the west, but nothing is expected to develop.  That system over the southern Caribbean has pushed into Nicaragua, but there is still a disorganized cluster of storms behind it.  NHC is not concerned.  Stay tuned!
