Can We Believe the Corps?

The Army Corps of Engineers released a series of maps (see today's Times-Picayune) that show a much improved hurricane protection system after Katrina. But can we believe them...can we trust them after the tragedy of Katrina? Unfortunately, we need a storm to test the integrity of the new levees before we can truly believe & trust them. Here's some good news. I discovered a web site that lists the frequency of return for tropical systems across SE Louisiana. This data should bring some comfort to those of you who question why we live here.

We can expect a tropical storm once every 3-5 years. A Cat. One Hurricane comes near every 6-10 years. A Cat. 2 every 13-22 years. A Cat. 3 once every 24-32 years. A Cat . 4 once every 34-78 years and a Cat. 5 once every 101-190 years. Bottom live, we may get a hurricane threat almost every summer, but most of the time they veer away. In fact, the return frequency of the bigger storms( Cat. 3-5) is very low...about once or twice in your lifetime. Hopefully, Katrina was our big storm, or at least we won't see a storm that strong for another decade or two. By then the Corps should have completed our Hurricane protection. Let's hope time is on our side.

We may see a few showers & weak T-Storms early on Friday, but our next real severe weather threat appears likely late Monday or early Tuesday of next week. That's plenty of time to head on over to Walgreens and get your programmable weather alert radio. You can't buy this radio anywhere for a cheaper price. ($29.99)

You know that hurricane season is now nearing, and before we know it, it'll be June 1. We are already beginning to see the signs of summer, temperatures might top out to 80 degrees, or even more, on Saturday! And I've heard about some 100 degree temperatures in southern Texas, too.

Why does everyone try to make the Army Corp look bad? They are the ones trying to help all those people that insist on living below sea-level! They didn't build levy's first then tell everyone to move below sea-level, everyone decided to move below sea-level on their own and the Army Corp said, "Well I guess we better try to help these stupid people.." and try and keep them safe. Why is everyone blaming insurance companies? Did they tell you not to buy flood or the right amount of coverage? NO people gambled to save a few hundred bucks and lost.. It's all that SIMPLE.
