Gustav Nearing Coast...

The time to strengthen is running out as the outer bands of Gustav are reaching the coast. It appears he will not make any sharp moves and landfall near Morgan City remains a good call. As caveman reminded us...NHC has nailed the track...even at 5 days! They still have suffered the usual intensity problems as they readily admit. It appears the worst/brunt of the storm will be south of New Orleans with wind gusts in the city reaching hurricane force (74-90+) between 8 AM & 4 PM. Farther south winds should top 100 + mph for many hours with surge reaching 12-18' west of the river. East of the river the surge should be no worse than 8-12' with Lake P. rising 5-8 feet. That should put water over the seawall on the Mandeville lakefront, but nothing like Katrina. I'm going to sleep for 4 hours and will be back on-air by 5 AM. Sorry I can't answer your questions. I hope those who need to get out have and those who chose to stay are fully prepared. See you at first light.

Bob, I truly appreciate you being here throughout the storm. My friend who is in Natchez and can not get internet or your broadcast listened to you through my phone to hear your words of wisdom.

We are so lucky here in NOLA to have you here.

Thank you!!!!

I would also like to extend my thanks for your diligence and hard work to report the facts in a calm and collected manner. I'm sure many were also grateful for the graceful maneuver you pulled to do damage control from the heavy handed words of Mayor Nagin during his mandatory evac speech.

Bob, I'm from Chauvin, LA and we had to come to Texas because my father has cancer and he had a 48 hour treatment this weekend. We can't get your broadcast here at all. And no other cannel talks about Chauvin, do you know if we have water yet! My father is worried about all of our homes. Thank you,
Dawn

Bob:

I really appreciate your professional reporting of Hurricane Gustav. We evacuated to Mobile, Alabama and watched the live stream of Fox 8.

I can’t tell you how comforting it was to be able to get you live so we could know the exact situation with the storm.

I would like to address Mayor Nagin’s news conference where he called Gustav the “Mother of all Storms”’ and that it had a 900 mile foot print!

Does the Mayor NOT realize just how foolish and irresponsible this is? Does he not realize how idiotic he looks when he makes statements like these?

Turns out, Gustav was bad in spots like Grand Isle and was more of an imposition and inconvenience for the rest of us, Thank God!

I would like to ask the Mayor to do three things.

1.Don’t be hysterical
2.Don’t embellish
3.Just give the people the facts

Thanks for the great reporting and for giving us the facts Bob. From now own, lets hope other people in positions of responsibility will follow your lead.

Please tell us something about the Westbank. My home is in Westwego. My family's homes are in Marrero and Avondale.. NO ONE is telling us anything. A rumor is causing mass hyteria where we are. Saying Avondale got ten feet last night, Westwego Canal overlapping its banks and the Harvey canal as well. We were told they expect all of those to put a minimum of ten feet on all the land areas between them.. PLEASE clarify for us..

To Panicked in Arkansas, my family and I live on the Westbank in Marrero. We have security cameras around our house that we can monitor from the Internet. Of course, the power is out now; but until around 7:30 this morning we were able to monitor things there. On our street (we're near Randolph) there was no water or flooding that we could see. Just some rain and wind. I'm pretty sure that most of the area is still okay. I can't speak for extremely low lying areas that flood for just ordinary storms though. Hope that helps put your mind at ease just a bit.

Regarding the LA drivers thing, not a whole lot of good is going to come from pointing fingers and bringing up something like that. Evacuations are stressful, and many more people are on the roads than normal during those times. I'm in no way saying that LA drivers are good drivers. It just kinda seems pointless to bring up at a time like this. By all means take care of yourself first. No one is expecting anyone to neglect his/her own needs.

And as for Mayor Nagin misrepresenting the strength and scope of this storm, remember what it was and what it was forecast to be at the time of his statement. All in all he's handled this storm infinitely better than Katrina, and I'm saying that as someone who generally doesn't think very highly of him. Being overly cautious was the right thing to do. No one wants another Katrina situation. Better to be inconvenienced rather than stuck with lives at risk.

NEW PREDICTION: Tropical depression 9 soon to be hurricane Ike will be entering the gulf in a week or so with landfall on somewhere in the central gulf coast are of Louisiana. Gustav was the wake up call for Ike who is on his way. As soon as we all get back we more than likely will be leaving yet again to head north.
