Ike nearing coast...LA winds start to slacken...

At 8 PM Hurricane Ike, borderline Cat. 3(Stil Cat. 2 110 mph)...looking as impressive as ever on satellite loops is making landfall on the upper Texas coast. The forward eye wall is moving over Galveston Island with the eye only 30-40 miles behind. I'm sure damage will be widespread with the unknown being how high the surge and how many will drown? Kind of scary hearing about thousands staying behind in harm's way. I feel caveman's fears as this could result in many deaths. Locally, our winds are now back into the 20-30 mph range (still gusting above 40 at times) and water levels will slowly recede especially after high tides midday on Saturday. A cold front will arrive early on Monday shifting the winds to the north and pushing the rest of the storm surge out of the lakes & marshes and into the Gulf.

Questions...are the wetlands worth saving? Should we bother to rebuild out west each year after year because of fires? C'mon, of course we should rebuild...and it can be done. Will it be cheap? Nope, but worth it? Absolutely. Hey, they'll rebuild San Francisco after the earthquake even tho it'll happen again. End of discussion. Thanks David & skygoddness for your comments.

Hey Bob- Thanks for the down to earth reasoning and plain talk getting us through these two hurricanes. Thats the reason your so well liked. You speak from expierence, and even though times get rough, you remain calm and talk us through these things. I will continue to turn to your advice during these threatening storms. Good Job Bob, Thanks.
