Special Update...Caveman is Gone

Hi Gang. Perhaps you have noticed "caveman" has not been on the blog. He has tried but I have removed him. Why? 1) this is my blog...no advertisers...don't do it for money. 2) got tired of his self promotions. 3) Even when he's wrong, he's always right. 4) His guesses only increase the anxiety of my viewers and they don't need that. I'm sure many of you can add others, but lets just let it go. I'm here to focus on the danger to Louisiana and RIGHT NOW the impacts will be minimal except along the coasts where high water will return to cover many highways. Those living down along the coast should get inside the levee protection system that kept the water out with Gustav and should do the same with Ike.

What could change? IF Ike doesn't start a more westward turn in the next 12-24 hours. That would bring him closer increasing our impacts. I am watching for that but I will not hype this storm. It still looks like a Texas, maybe SW LA problem. Next update after 10 PM

I wondered how long you were going to put up with it. We have a bunch of new bloggers who I was afraid were going to consider that clown an expert. I am waiting for Ike to turn but I do see the northeast movement.

Don't cry for Caveman. He already has employment with Fox News operating their terror alert system.

Hi Bob,
I live about 40 miles southeast of the city, and I have to say I am a bit concerned. I am afraid that if Ike continues to go north, we won't have enough time to get out of dodge. When should people south of the city start to get concerned? I have always been one to not wait as far as evacuations are concerned and have never been stuck in gridlock (fortunately). Please address this issue in your next blog. Thanks!

Let's hope Ike starts moving a little faster. I am sure we will all keep an eye on it until it is close to landfall.
IF it does make landfall in NW La., will we experience same effects we saw with Rita?
As always, we appreciate all you do, Bob, in keeping us informed in a calm manner. Thanks.

IF it does hit NW LA, will the effects we feel here be like what we had with Rita?
As always, we appreciate all you do, Bob, in keeping us informed in a calm and rational manner. Thanks

Bob:

I was getting the feeling that you were getting a little too involved with that guy. It was to the point where you were spending half your post talking about him instead of the weather.

Unfortunately, that's exactly what trolls want: to be fed. Glad you stopped feeding him. Let's move on now.

So anyway, I think even if it slowed to the point where it was a threat to SE LA - a veeerry remote possibility, from what I've seen - it won't be nearly as strong as its currently predicted to get.

It seems to me for whatever reason (shallow water off the coast, I suppose) these things usually lose their steam as they approach the LA coast. And while a fast moving powerful hurricane could threaten us, a very slow moving system wouldn't be able to keep it together long enough to drop on us as a cat 3 or 4.

I'd be interested to know what your thoughts are on this, Bob.

Cheers,

Greg

Hi Bob: My DH and I retired from CA and arrived in Diamondhead, MS on 6/29/2005....yup....2 months to the day before Katrina. To say we were welcomed to MS is an understatement. Just want you to know how much we think of you and your wisdom and compassion. Caveman, I do believe, is/was a caveman with the same mentality. Otherwise, he wouldn't put himself on the same level as the experienced person that you are. We depend on YOU, even though we have local WLOX. Don't change Bob and thank you for being you.

Bob, I am not so concerned about having to leave.however, I live in Marrero, and my Mother lives in Gretna, and I am concerned about what do you think the risk of flooding is in the metro and 'burbs?

SOOOO SORRY forgot to tell you thanks for making Caveman extinct.

Hey, I don't agree with every thing Caveman said but he is does have a MET background. I don't like censorship and I am dissappointed in this choice because the whole point is to have discussion. If you don't want dissent then maybe you should block all posts.

I will exercise my own choice to discuss issues on other blogs where dissent is welcomed. I am sad to see that people won't be able to post freely because the only thing that will be allowed through are "I love Bob, Bob is the best posts" and people looking for additional meaningful, intelligent discussion will have lost a great resource.

It isn't censorship. This is Bob's blog. If he feels someone is becoming a distraction or detracting from the quality of the place, that's his call.

Think about it less like a free marketplace of ideas, and more like its Bob's living room. Like any of us, its Bob's choice to show an obnoxious houseguest the door.

Caveman is always free to go start cavemanweather.com, and he can be the star of the show there all he wants.

btw, sciencegal, contrary to your assertion of censorship of anything but Bob worship, you should notice that your own comment was approved.

Went back after to read some posts on caveman, seems like him and Bob attacked each other alot? Noticed the blog earlier today that it was Bob attacking him? Not sure who that guy is but seems like he does know what is going on somewhat. Looks like Ike is moving closer to the TX/LA boarder that he mentioned many days back that Bob had pretty much recently discounted. There is alot of "I love Bob" stuff on here. I have lived in south La for nearly half my life and I really don't see much from Bob until the track is pretty much nailed down by the NHC to just a day or two out. Noticed today that Bob on his forecast kinda made a line towards TX/LA as a possible landfall area? Hope Cavedude is wrong but seems like he may not be, I don't think he is guessing either.

I am new to your blog and am very glad that you got the caveman thing under control. The reason I started reading your blog was to get an educated and calm response to all the hurricane frenzy. I was really afraid he was going to screw it up for everyone.

Caveman had some valid points and some not so valid points i think he will fit in good at the weatherunderground.com.But as always we trust bob. WHat happens tonight if it doesnt start heading toward the west north west track Bob, and if it doesn't change will their be enough time it seams to be stalling out

OMG, no more caveman??!! I turned some friends of mine on to Bob's blog partly because of caveman's antics. Some of them even speculated that caveman was Bob's alter ego -- an outlet for Bob to render outlandish predictions that he wouldn't dare utter in public at the risk of tarnishing his reputation. Me, I just thought caveman was positioning himself to be the “Abdul the Tentmaker” to Bob's Buddy D. His prehistoric meteorological predictions aside, caveman's occasional wit will be missed by at least one of Bob's faithful.

Bob,

We are hosting the 9th annual Italian Heritage Festival in Kenner's Rivertown on Saturday and Sunday. I am putting up the stage on Friday, with 40'foot banners and flags 30'feet in the air. My wind tolerance is about 25 to 30 mph sustained, and I can take a stiffer gusts. How are we looking? Would it drastically improve if we set up after midnight on Friday?

Sciencegal, it is very unfortunate you feel that a blogger here has been silenced of his free speech. I agree that this country does provide all people the right to their own opinions, beliefs, and discussions. However, free speech is not unlimited expression of all thoughts. That's right, there are limits. Everyone has the right to say as they feel, UNTIL those feelings begin to infringe upon the rights of others. The same way Caveman had the "right" to say what he truly felt, the majority of people on this blog had the right to not have someone freighten them based on non-information. What I am trying to say is, people's right to free speech ends at the point it endangers the safety and serenity of others.
I am not talking about political correctness here. I am talking about people who have suffered through Katrina, many seeing their hard earned lives and homes destroyed. Then barely escaping another major storm in Gustav. We south Louisianians are a delicate lot right now. Many on anti-depressants and anxiety medication. Some folks may be in an extremely delicate state to where they do not need to be freightened unnecessarily.
I will always support free speech. The problem with many posts by caveman is that they endangered the well being of some people. In my OPINION, they basically amounted to the same thing as someone going into a crowded movie theatre and yelling "fire" when there was none. That is illegal and scaring people erroneously is a violation of the rights and safety of others. What caveman did was not illegal. However, many of his comments did more harm than good and the rights of many scared visitirs to Bob's site were far more important than the right of one man to say "what he felt."

For years you were the only weatherman my Mom would allow on in her home and I have found a great deal of comfort in the way you have handled hurricane season and all of the hype that seems to come out when anything pops up.

I trust your instincts and turn to you when things start to happen..

Thanks for sharing your knowledge and common sense with us, it is very appreciated.

Hi,
First off I would like to say thank you for all you do and have done. I grew up watching you on TV and doing your lawn on Butternut. My mawmaw lives on Garden (she is the very short Italian lady who walks everyday with the very tall lady.) I also attended St. Edwards. I would like to know your opinion about landfall near the LA/TX border. See I live in Baton Rouge and things are a bit crazy still since the last hurricane. Power is still down in many areas and the amount of trees on the road sides concerns me. With two children under the age of 2, I am a little worried. The last thing I need is a log flying in the window in the pitch black. Do you think it would be better for me to be in Metairie with my Grandparents or Baton Rouge. Thanks so much.

metrywhodat: I empathize with all of you in So. LA. I am from Pass Christian MS and lost EVERYTHING in Katrina, so I DO understand. I moved off the water and almost evacuated for Gustav but as I have noted before my husband is a meteorologist and I am lucky enough to have that additional information on an almost too frequent basis. IF caveman had been a little less arrogant he did have had good points with knowledge to back up his analysis but they got lost behind his "need" to be king of the rock.

Thank you all for your honest feedback. Thats why I blog and I post comments.

Sciencegal,
I totally agree with you. At times, he seemed to have some knowledge. However, in a forum such as this, covering topics that so drastically impact people's lives, he should have been more tactful and considerate. I am sorry for your losses in Katrina. I did not mean to imply that you did not have sympathy. To the contrary, I have always found your posts very informative and considerate.
Let's hope after Ike, all of us in the Gulf Coast Region can have a few years off of worrying about storms. Not good for the psyche.
I have enjoyed the opportunity to have a mature discussion of ideals. Hope all are well. Let's keep pulling for Ike to continue to shift west. Not that I would ever wish a storm on anyone, I selfishly want Ike to stay away from Louisiana. Forgive me if this offends......Just being honest.

sciencegal said...

Thank you metrywhodat.... I am not offended by anyone's honest opinion. I would LOVE to stop worrying about storms for five years but if you listen to the experts we are in the middle of a "ten-year" cycle of increased activity. Anxiety and depression are things we have come to live with, some well, and some not so well. Better living through medication or staying so busy that there isn't time to think about it. In the early modeling of Ike, when it looked like it was coming this way, I had serious anxiety and lost a fair amount of sleep. I think about and pray for anyone in the path of this storm and hope they fair better than we all did in Katrina. My fear is that it will be bad when it makes landfall and you can bet I will be making donations to the red cross and other relief agencies that came to our aid in our time of need. To all of you out there in the path... take care, protect yourrself, worry about the stuff later.

Hi, I have been coming to this blog since 1567. I have noticed that the weather has always done what I tell it to do. I do Indian Rain Dances, and sometimes I make appearences on the Jack Benny radio show to warn people that the weather needs to travel too! Sometimes Hurricanes need to go visit other states and see the sights. No, I'm just kidding - Im not really 441 years old and I don't do indian rain dances. Hi everyone! Yall take care now and stay safe from those winds and rains! Hi BOB!

Wow...

I guess, that I work with several blogs, and Caveman has several screen names on those blogs, and has had a couple on here. He gets banned frequently...
I don't like censorship, but this isn't a newspaper. It's Bob's Blog. I have a blog, and I am very quick to get rid of people who upset the general masses.
I guess making meteorological statements that are well thought out that others agree/disagree with are great...I learn from mistakes as well, but to me, upsetting comments, trying to scare folks, serves no purpose.
AND, this is a PRIVATELY OWNED BLOG.

Guess, us kids have to behave! :)

...but it was kinda funny at times...
