Late Season Storms...

As usual, October storms are forming far away from us. In fact without satellite loops, Tropical Storm (now Depression) Nana would most likely not have been discovered since she formed so far out in the Atlantic away from the main shipping lanes. There are 2 areas in the Caribbean that have the potential to become our next named storms, but we have nothing to worry about since the current upper and surface steering patterns will keep these storms from coming our way. Computer models for the next 10-14 days show more cold fronts coming with each one getting colder and colder. We will certainly need sweaters and jackets before the end of this month.

As you know, tropical systems can't exist with cold air. That's why I have told you several weeks ago I believed we were out of the woods regarding the 2008 Hurricane Season. Even IF something does develop in the Gulf out of the blue during the next 2 weeks, it would be a weak storm...one where we would not have to evacuate. There is NOTHING in the long range models that indicate something will form in the Gulf. Let's keep the pressure on our politicians to keep the pressure on Congress to fund the projects the Corps can finish BEFORE the start of the 2009 season.

The most recent Winter Outlooks indicate one of the coldest Winters in many years for much of the lower 48 states is coming. The last time we have had a severe freeze south of Lake Pontchartrain is 1989. Could this be the year we dip below 20 degrees again? Perhaps snow for Christmas? I'm putting away my shorts and getting out my winter gear already !
