We have seen 2 very distinct upper air patterns this winter. There was the West Coast trof that brought snow to Seattle & Portland for days back in Dec with the other being the deep East Coast trof that has brought the coldest winter to most of the Great Lakes. With the big shifts in the upper flow come big changes in temperatures. Tonight the East Coast trof has passed us and is NOT digging anymore. That means the core of the cold will again stay to our north & east keeping the pipe-busting freezes away from us. A huge warm up will occur this weekend as the West cools down and turns wet while we see highs return to 70+. Of course with warmer air will come the fog potential so we'll be watching for that by Sunday.
Finally a major science magazine (SKY & TELESCOPE) has an article in their March issue regarding what MIGHT BE causing our current warming cycle...which appears to have slowed or stopped. There is a lengthy discussion on past solar cycles & their effect on our Planet (cooling & warming). I would hope our new President is exposed to this information. There is NO SCIENTIFIC CONSENSUS regarding this debate. The AGW alarmist want you to believe that, but finally a major science journal presents the other side. Debate means there is discussion. So far the media has given mainly one side of the debate. Go read on line.

I like how you emphasize "Again" because thats whats uniqe about this winter because the past few winters we have been stuch for the most part in a Zonal Patern.
But then then I ask the Big question...
Will the cold pattern shift back to the east again in the comming weeks? The answer in my thinking is yes, however,it wont be as long as it was the past two times or as cold but there maybe frosts but not freezes.
On another note...
Jeezee its been an cold winter here! I realy have not seen us freeze or get near freezeing on the southshore so many times in one winter on the southshore.Atleast as far as I can remember...
I almost forgot to ask...
Do you think if that volcan in Alaska were to errupt soon do you think it may further the cooling we have been seeing or do you think it would simply give us another year of colorful sunsets?
Volcanic eruptions in the past have cooled the Planet IF they are large enough & go on for days. No disrespect meant here...but you are too young to remember past winters that brough far worse freezes. I remember pipe bustin' freezes in '83,85, & the greatest...Dec. 1989. We stayed below freezing on the Southshore for 72+ hours! Ice formed on Lake P. out to 1/2 mile from the shore. Major fish kills. The longer one lives, the more one experiences. Come visit.
Ohh I understand I realy dont remember anything before 1998. The earliest weather related thing I can remember is seeing John Hope on TWC talking about Hurricane Georges right before I evacuated. I was only 4 when that happened though. I would love to visit Fox Fox8 and it would also be an honor, when would you like me to come? It would actually be easy since my dad works right down the Street at Louisiana Fresh on S. Dupree St. I pass Fox 8all the time.
Saw an interesting show last night on the History Channel. The talked about solar storms. The did mention about the current lack of the sunspots cycle which to me could be causing this cold winter. They also expect the another violent year of solar storms in the year 2012.
They showed how these storm show the Northern Lights...just awesome video shots here...but they do expect those sunspots to return some 30 to 50 greater than the the solar storm record back in 1958...I think the year was...
Any, it does seem colder today than previous cold snaps we have had.
Ah Bob....Its almost The PLAYOFFS...hows the weather shaping up for next weekends parades???
Onlyreal, I do agree about the cold air coming back in mid-February, but i think unlike in the past several winters, there will be enough cold air in the source regions to squeeze out more freezes even in late February.
Bob, I guess I'm alot closer to your age, cause I can remember those brutally cold events that you mentioned along with the 1960's and 1970's which featured both snow and plenty of freezes especially on the southshore. Ice on the puddles was common place when I was a kid.
For anybody on here intrested in further reading on the Possible Global Cooling Jeff Master Just posted a good entry on the subject.
So the low of 28 degrees won't be long enough to hurt the pipes?
