Wow...what a month it has been! Nearly 26" of rain fell shattering the all time wettest month ever by almost an inch. (25.90+ vs 25.11") Now our next worry over the next several weeks will be how cold is it gonna get. Timing is everything but it sure looks to stay well below our historical normal/average (62/43) for quite some time. Thursday will be the exception as highs should be in the 60s ahead of our next cold surge that arrives after dark and before midnight. Models are not as aggressive in deepening the East Coast trough today, but that could change as we head into next week. Minus 20-30 degrees covers a good part of Canada and, with a deep east Coast trough, that air surging southward over lots of snow cover could bring us the coldest air that we've seen in many years. I would use this weekend to prepare/winterize (you should have already) your house & gardens. Be ready to bring in those hoses and cover any tropical plants. Snow possibilities? I don't see any at this time. Will give it another look tomorrow.
Be careful if you're going out to party tomorrow night. A Happy & Safe New Year to you all.

Thanks, Bob.
Do you see the conditions that led to our wet December sticking around?
The potential exists for an Arctic Outbreak next week. All models break a piece of energy off of the Polar Vortex in the Arctic and send it South into the Lower 48 due to a blocking high over Greenland. A mammoth East Coast Trough will develop and put us under deep NW Flow. This trough will advect brutally cold air to SE LA straight from the poles. It won't be cold for a day either; there could be record cold for a week period starting Monday with the extreme cold arriving next Wednesday. The first potential for snow with this event is Monday. If current data is correct expect Highs 28F-35F and Lows on the SS to be 15F-20F(10F-15F on the Northshore)on Wednesday and into the extended. The models also develop a strong winter storm on Thursday; this would bring Ice and snow to the New Orleans area. I will have and update in a few days as the event draws closer. I am also willing to answer any questions on the particulars on the event and how to prepare for it. If current model runs verify, this event could rival the 1989 cold snap.
Happy New Year to Bob and the Channel 8 Krewe!!!
Wow OnlyReal thanks for the detailed analysis of what you expect the next 7-10 days. Sure sounds like we're in for some really cold air and the flurries...I say bring it on....it beats 95 degree temps and 80% humidity.
Hey going back to last post, I think the Saints are having a great season and yes I was so mad at the loss to Tampa Bay...but look Minnesota lost to Carolina and Da Bears and you betcha the loss to The Bears hurts the Viking fans..because the Bears are on TB level in quality. It is nice to get some help to get home field advantage!!!
Plus I see now we are a cinch to win the Superbowl having seen that we now have our beloved weather guru, Bob Breck kicking our field goals and extra points now!!!! I heard Bob's a shoe in form 50 yards and in...
Go Saints!!!!
Happy New Years everyone
