Winter 2/3rd Over !

We have completed the 1st 2 months of "Meteorological" winter with one left to go. Historically, the threat of a hard (pipe busting) freeze ends around Feb 20th although we still can get light freezes well into March. The next 2 weeks sure looks like the "El Nino" pattern is locked in place with fast moving ststems racing across the southern U.S & Gulf coast. this keeps the core of any cold air far to our north but it also brings us rainy periods every 3-4 days. This week will see a minor system fly by late Monday into early Tuesday with a stronger system arriving late Thursday into Friday. In between, Tuesday PM & Wednesday appear dry & pleasantly cool.

As mentioned, FOX 8 has purchased 2 completely stand alone HD weather graphic systems. It involves extensive re-wiring and that is why our satellite & radar loops plus Marine and Extended forecast are not currently available. You will notice the high resolution graphics coming during the next few days and weeks. We are working hard to remain YOUR WEATHER AUTHORITY.

Times-Pic had an editorial yesterday about more intense hurricanes in the future(Maybe?) They failed to print the "peer reviewed" article in February's NATURE stating that the warming from increased CO2 was vastly over played as reported in the 2007 IPCC report. More and more reports are surfacing regarding that the "science" behind Global Warming is flawed, and in some cases just wrong.

Today will begin mostly cloudy and cool with temperatures in the 40's across the area. We should warm up into the mid 50's by this afternoon; however, it will not be pleasant due to the showers that will be moving through. Rain chances will steadily increase into this evening as the Gulf Low makes its closest approach to our area. Whatever rain that falls this afternoon and tonight will not be heavy. Rainfall totals across SE LA should be a half an inch at worst.

All the rain should be out of here by Tuesday morning and it should be a very pleasant day. There will be filtered sunshine across SE LA and areas that experience the most sunshine could reach 60F. The tranquil weather will continue into Tuesday night and temperatures should fall into the 40's.

The brief episode of dry weather that we will have on Tuesday will end abruptly Wednesday Evening as a strong upper level disturbance embedded in the Sub Tropical Jet Stream approaches our area from the west. This disturbance will trigger the development of a Surface Low in the Gulf of Mexico. The rain associated with the Surface Low will begin to impact our area Wednesday night. The best chance of rain with this system will come Thursday and Thursday Night when the Gulf Low tracks over SE LA. Expect some heavy rain and an occasional rumble of thunder. No flooding expected with this low, however, rainfall totals should be in the 1-2 inch range especially south of the lake. It will just be a good soaking.

Friday will be kind of nasty due to lingering clouds and showers behind the surface low. We should clear up by Friday evening and this will be the beginning of a dry weekend. It will be a mostly cloudy weekend, but it will be a high cloud deck. The good news it will be dry.

So.....will we get any flooding from this Thursday weather system? Also, will it warm up for Superbowl Sunday or will it be a sweater/jacket day?
