1st 90 Degree Day

Yep, almost on cue we reached 90 officially at MSY. Looking back on the past 5 years, the 1st 90 occurred during the 2nd or 3rd week in May...2006 being the exception (April 17th). From here on til September we'll be 90 or above UNLESS we have daytime heating showers or a tropical system. We do have a weak front that will be in our neighborhood for the next 2 days and that might enhance our shower chances. Later in the week, an upper ridge will build across us capping the atmosphere and making shower chances near zero. So, get use to the 90s as we are about to enter SUMMER IN DA SOUTH !

Finally, the network news folks are picking up on what is the MAIN factor moving the oil in the Gulf..."it's the currents stupid !" I began saying that several weeks ago on FOX 8 that 1st weekend after the explosion when winds of 20-30 mph from the SE FAILED to bring the oil ashore. I speculated that 2 things were at work. 1) The natural Gulf currents were keeping the oil from coming into the Marsh and 2) the higher than normal Mississippi River might be helping divert the oil from the coast. Today's satellite views clearly show the oil moving farther towards the Loop Current (not good) plus the Mississippi is nearing 13 feet and is expected to stay there for another week to 10 days. At 13 feet, that is a HUGE volume of water flowing off our coast. Bottom line...until the leak is sealed, we continue to live on borrowed time. Sooner or later, the river will drop, currents will change and some oil will come ashore. Hopefully the damage to our environment will not be too great, the damage to our people so severe that, as the song says..."We get knocked down, but we get back up again". Stay strong Louisiana !
