Computer models are predicting the deep east coast trough will hang around for another 7-10 days bringing down several cold fronts that will begin the process of cooling down the Gulf's warm water temperatures. I expect to see the beginnings of this cool down shortly as Lake Pontchartrain has fallen from near 90 earlier this month down to the low-mid 80s tonight. With morning air temperatures predicted to be in the 50s on the Northshore for the rest of this week and maybe some 40s by the weekend, water temps should response by falling into the 70s rather quickly in the Lake since it is so shallow. The Gulf will take much longer to drop into the 70s. The main benefit of the East Coast trough is it protects us from any tropical threat. If that pattern persists beyond October 10th, we will not see a major hurricane threat this year and that would be nice. Doesn't mean a weaker storm can't threaten, but the big storms that require evacuations will be steered away from us. It does appear Florida and up the east coast will be under the gun for heavy rains as they are on the "wet" side of the east coast trough.
In the short term, no rain is expected thru the weekend with comfy cool nights and pleasantly warm days. September will end up as the 2nd driest (.33) at Louis Armstrong Airport in Kenner. Compare that to the 4.56" that has fallen at FOX 8. Location, location, location !
