Tropics in a Lull...but NFL

Former Coach Jerry Glanville was the first to say NFL meant Not For Long (referring to coach's tenure). Same can be said for the tropics at this time of the year as, historically, we are almost to the peak (Sept. 10) of tropical activity. NHC tonight is indicating a wave moving off of Africa will likely become our next named storm (Igor) later this week. Global computer models are taking this system along the same track (recurving east of Florida) of previous storms this season. Models are also bringing back a deep east coast trough in another 7-10 days that will probably bring down a stronger cold front than the one that made us feel so good this past weekend. As long as nothing develops in the Caribbean or the Gulf, we should be OK regarding these long track Cape Verde storms that seem to be recurving away from the U.S. I'll feel much better once we get into October and our water temperatures have cooled below 80. Stay tuned !

In the short term, the moisture with Hermine should stay to our north and west as high pressure builds westward over us. This should mean fewer showers and hotter temperatures the next few days.

Bob,
For years I've wanted to say thank you for how you cover hurricanes. You are not afraid to tell us the long-term info (such as the next front that is expected to come down or that the models, right now, have the potentially future Igor to curve east of the U.S.). For those of us that have lived down here w/hurricanes all of our lives, we truly appreciate the background info and scenarios you communicate to us. It helps us all be more calm or buckle down and begin early planning if it looks warranted. I just wanted to finally say thank you...you are the first I turn to, especially in hurricane season.
