Irene Looking Meaner...Look out NYC !

Everything points to a real monster storm moving up the east coast brushing the Carolina's Outer Banks and then hammering Long Island, NYC and most of New England. The last storm of this magnitude was Gloria back in 1985, although Bob hit back in 1991 as a weaker system. Both names were retired. Since 20+ years have passed, how many folks do you think will be prepared for flooding rains (5-8+"), damaging, power outage winds(60-80+ mph), and a storm surge that could put water into places it hasn't been in generations? The good news is that Irene will miss us and all of the Gulf Coast. We have endured a way too active stretch of storms and it's time to spread the misery. Perhaps then the folks up north will have more respect for those of us who choose to live in a hurricane prone area. We know how to prepare and we know how to evacuate. Let's see how well they do. The rest of the tropics are tame compared to Irene. Another wave just off of Africa could develop, but it's 2 weeks away.

In the short term, the current heat wave shows no signs of breaking this week. Another heat advisory is in effect for Wednesday.

I think those that live up north don't think we are crazy for living near the Gulf but think we are crazy for living below sea-level!

The track has shifted east of New York now. It may not be as first expected.

"Let's see how well they do." How disappointing to read that in your comments.

I have a question for those more knowledgeable than myself: why do the invest numbers only run from 90 to 99? Also, I'm not a religious fanatic or anything, but I think it would be good to offer up a prayer for those folks on the east coast in the path of Irene.

Good news about Irene, Bob! I totally agree with your hesitance to talk about every darn wave that is in existence..Who cares when it starts! Where it goes is more important thing. And no one knows that until it is has that initializing point. I got better things to do than track every wave that comes off of Africa.

I think the "let's see how well they do" comment is a fair one to make.

I had vac plans this weekend in NY. The hotel and airline say that everything is still ok and that we should still plan to go. (??) I wonder what their local Bob Breck is saying to New Yorkers?
