They were wrong, but they were right...

Blogging early because of Saint's game. As I mentioned earlier, cudos to NHC on forecasting the track of Irene. After initially forecasting a Florida hit near MIA, once the models locked on to the east coast, they varied little day to day. (Reminds you about Katrina Track forecasting?) I'm sure NHC is totally frustrated with their intensity forecasts as the storm just didn't do what they expected. A research project for sure...why didn't Irene's winds get higher when her pressure was so low? Was Irene over hyped? Absolutely, but she needed to be based on what she could have done. Watching video this afternoon clearly showed some bad impacts even though she weakened to a Tropical Storm at landfall. For a population area with little hurricane experience, I feel NHC and emergency managers did an outstanding job. If the persistent pattern (Storms curving around the Bermuda High and heading up east coast) continues, we could see more threats for them in the next several weeks. At the moment, no models are bringing a storm into the Gulf for the next 10-14 days.

Aw c'mon...did you see in today's paper the alarmists once again trying to tie in Hurricane Irene to AGW. Yep, they claim AGW is causing more intense storms yet they fail to remember history. We have had more intense storms in the past. (NYC had Donna in 1960, Gloria in 1985, Bob in 1991)...and Irene wasn't as strong as those storms. Tis, tis, never let facts get in the way of a good story.

Irene was a tropical storm at landfall?

You almost HAVE to over-hype hurricanes for areas that normally don't see them, otherwise people simply won't respond, especially those who live in low-lying areas that will be affected by the storm surge.

Yes, I don't see why the NHC is getting heat from anyone. Had they not done their job more people would have died.

Was it catastrophic? Decidedly no. But the fact is that storm - over hyped or not - caused a lot of damage.

And Bob, don't early indications look like newly formed TD Twelve is taking a similar path.

Bob, the models are pointing at home grown mischief possible this weekend. I know you're not a fortune teller, but for those of us with beach vacations planned for the holiday weekend could you give us some insight?

Yes, Bob, please tell us....because we all know these models are always right.

37 dead, estimated 15 billion in damage, 2000 fights cacelled, historic wood bridges washedbaway, entire cities flooded, mass transit shut down for first time in history...... Yeah it was a big deal.

Bob let's talk about these swirls I am seeing in the Gulf. I don't want to alarm anyone but I don't like what I see. The Hurricane Center has yet to acknowledge them.
