As many of you know, I was off to Orlando to attend the National Hurricane Conference where I presented 2 talks...Communication Challenges after Katrina and...Tropical Storm Lee, What Worked, What Didn't. Thanks to superb graphics constructed by Kim Vaughn, I felt the presentations were well received. A discouraging note, once again I was the only local broadcaster to attend. I realize budgets are tight, but if one is counted on to be the trusted credible voice during a hurricane crisis, shouldn't those persons be at these conferences to learn what went right and what went wrong the previous season? I learned several things from what Irene did as she went up the east coast last summer. Just me, I can't go in front of the camera unless I feel I'm as well prepared as possible and the annual hurricane conference is part of that process.
A couple of talks brought up Global Warming. Both down played any effect on tropical systems. One even said that the numbers of Trop. Storms & Hurricanes were down globally. Only the Atlantic Basin is above average. The 2012 prediction will come out on April 4th. Hints were dropped that the forecasted numbers will be well below last year's 19 named storms and closer to the long term average of 12. 2 reasons are 1) it appears an El Nino is beginning (stronger shear) and 2) the Atlantic seas surface temperatures are much cooler than last year. Stay tuned!
I'll be back on air on Monday. Enjoy your weekend!
