With August still a week away, the Tropics remain quiet in our part of the World. On the WV (Water Vapor) loop, there is a weak upper low over the west central Gulf with another one near Jamaica and a stronger one farther out in the Atlantic. These upper lows make for a hostile environment for tropical development and they are our friends. Again today, several models are hinting at a system forming way out in the Atlantic during the first week in August and heading towards the east coast of the U.S. before veering out to the NE. Really don’t put much faith in models that far out, but it’s the time of year when those things are supposed to happen. Fortunately, it appears no tropical system will be in the Gulf to threaten the Grand Isle Tarpon Rodeo. It begins on Thursday and ends Saturday night with the awards presentation. Can you imagine what a thrill it would be to receive a trophy from the Voice of the Saint’s Jim Henderson? I will be Jim’s assistant again this year as I allow him to flawlessly pronounce some real Cajun names, much like he does every football Sunday. He’s the best and I hope you can join us Saturday night on the island. The ceremony starts at 8:30 PM with the party going on well into the morning hours. Come register (wwwtarponrodeo.org ) and you might win a new 21’ boat.
In the short term, we had another round of storms this afternoon, but the downpour lasted less than an hour. Unlike Saturday’s storm that didn’t move, these were trucking creating wind gusts of 40-50 mph. There is a boundary well north of Lake Pontchartrain that could again be the focus of overnight and early morning storms. Unless that boundary sags farther to the south, I don’t believe we’ll see more heavy rains until a few storms bubble up during daytime heating Tuesday-Friday. A weak front could trigger more widespread storms on Saturday. As always, keep the rain gear handy. Stay tuned!
