Too Warm, Too Soon...

You all know me, I'd rather be too warm than too cold, but today's high of 78 (missed tying record of 79) is not good for our gardens & citrus trees.  I still have over 40 grapefruit to pick, but I noticed new leaf growth that will soon be followed by flower buds unless more cold arrives quickly. Our record lows are still in the pipe busting range (15-20 degrees) so we don't want to see flower buds pop and then have a freeze come and wipe out next year's crop.  There will be a strong cold front after midnight on Thursday that will drop us from near 80 during the day to into the 40s by daybreak on Friday.   This will not be a "clean" front as the upper SW flow should keep clouds & some light showers around into Saturday.   I don't expect any freezing temps with this front nor with the one the following week since the big dip in the jet stream will remain over the western states (That's why Seattle & Portland had snow) keeping the core of the cold from us.   After the 15-18, I expect a flip flop in that trough that could make for a real chilly end of February into early March. Since Mardi Gras is late (March 5), that is not good news for this year's parades.   Rather it be very cold now and warmer then.   The reverse might happen this year?

Today I was on the golf course at Chateau when some T-Storms erupted with vivid lightning.  The airport only recorded .02" but I know Chateau was swamped making it unplayable.  The next 2 days look mostly dry (lots of am fog) with some rain with the front on Friday.  Stay tuned!
