Another Arctic Blast Will Remind Us It's Winter...

Today's Spring preview will come to an abrupt end early tomorrow morning as another stron cold front blasts through us.  Today's mid 70s will be replaced by below normal/average temps for the next 7-10 days.  And here's why.

The upper storm track is now dipping far into the South and for the first time will link into the moisture from the southern sub-tropical track.  Depending on how deep the cold air pushes, this active southern track will produce a Gulf low late Thursday into Friday creating the POTENTIAL for some frozen precipitation across SE LA/MS.  Here's the areas covered by the NWS Winter Weather Advisory.

You can see it does NOT include areas south of Lake P. near the Lake.  My thinking hasn't changed as I think, while it will be much colder, the South Shore stays well above freezing.  We might see a brief period of sleet (ice pellets), but it should be no big deal.  We'll check on it again tomorrow as you may have to restrict travel plans west and north of the Lake for TOMORROW NIGHT.  I moved my tropical plants back into my He-Shed ahead of the cold air arriving.   You'll still have time to do that tomorrow morning.

Lots of clouds cover the nation today and that will be the case for the next few days.  This next surge of Arctic air is plenty cold, but it is NOT record breaking cold.

There is a little light snow & sleet north of the frontal boundary with some strong T-Storms south of the front.   There is a small window for severe weather overnight, mainly to our west.  That's where we have severe T-Storm Watches in effect, but those storms are expected to weaken before reaching us.

I grabbed these graphics off of Bruce's 4 PM broadcast giving you an idea of the timing of the front.
The highest rain chances happen between 4-6 AM with most of Thursday dry, windy & colder.  It's after dark Thursday when the chance for icy weather develops as a low moves along the front.

Once the front is by, we should stay dry through the weekend.  Then our concerns shift to freezing nights.

The North Shore is likely to see a moderate to hard freeze (24-28)  Saturday & Sunday morning with a light freeze (29-33) on the South Shore away from the Lake.    You'll still have time to prepare your yard tomorrow, but you'll have to bundle up.   January, as expected, has gone the opposite of our December warmth.  Enjoy!  Stay tuned!
