When The Weather Goes Quiet, I Become A Teacher

Part of my storytelling appeal was not only my ability to tell you about the weather, but the WHY the weather.  I guess I could have been a good science teacher (pay too low!) as I enjoyed educating my audience regarding the weather.  There were often many days when the weather was boring and that's when I picked out features that other weathercasters seemed clueless.  Today is such a day.  For instance, look at the satellite view of the Gulf where there are 3 different directions of wind flow.  Surface high pressure has drifted to our east as the eastern Gulf has a northerly flow (yellow arrows) of drier air.  On the other side, the western Gulf has a return southerly (lime green arrows) flow of moisture & clouds.  The Light Blue arrows show the upper flow is from the WSW.  Neat!

It will take time for the Gulf moisture to return (dew points still in 40s), so Thursday looks to be another nice Spring-like day.  But that won't last as the sub-tropical jet stream is getting active again.

More storms are heading to California and the northern jet stream is expected to dip over the Great Lakes for this weekend.   That will bring another surge of colder air for us this weekend, but the core of the cold will stay well to our north.

It's very much still Winter farther to the north, but look how mild/warm the southern states are.  We are not done with the cold, but I don't see any signs of a Polar Vortex developing for the next 10-14 days.

I threw in the bottom view from outside of Boulder today.  Some folks see this view everyday.  Topography does make a difference.  Finally, 21 years ago today I made a commitment to a woman who brought me back out of the valley of darkness.

Happy Valentine's Day Brenda, and Happy 21st Anniversary!  Stay tuned!
