Hurricane Erin continues to be the only player to track on the Tropical scene as everything else just has potential, and that means it hasn't happened yet. Satellite views indicate Erin has become better organized with a well-defined eye again, showing up That indicates to me Erin is once again a Cat. 3 (Major) Hurricane. The good news is its inner core of destruction will remain well off the North Carolina Coast, with the main impacts being waves creating some lowland flooding & coastal erosion.
Offshore wave heights are 35-40 feet, with the main issues along the coast being strong rip currents. Most beaches have been closed to swimmers as Erin will pass by tonight and on Thursday. Since the Gulf remains delightfully quiet, Tonight's podcast will focus on what all of us should already know. IF a Hurricane threat comes this season, what will you do? Where will you go? Can I stay?

Surprisingly, NHC keeps Erin as a Cat. 2 storm, but they expect her to briefly become a Cat. 3 tonight into Thursday.
This has been a great practice for all emergency managers along the East Coast. Hopefully, we don't see an Erin-type hurricane impact any land areas this season, but we have a long way to go. The Tropical Atlantic does have several systems of interest, but nothing is developed in the short term by computer models.
The wave approaching the Leeward Islands will likely follow in Erin's track while Invest 99 L looks to stay at a very low latitude. So for the next 10-12 days, we have nothing to worry about. However, the GFS is at it again, developing a hurricane in the western Gulf during the first week in September. Not to worry so far out.
It is getting chilly up north. Folks up in the Northeast need sweaters & jackets today. Our local NWS office is saying we could see a late August front next week. That would be nice!
Since storms have been few today, it's disgustingly hot.
But don't give up hope. Look at next week, where it might stay in the 80s! Stay tuned!
