Still Hot, But Different Feel, Tropics Remain Asleep, Waves Coming Off Africa

An early-season cold snap brought much of upper Michigan down into the 30s this morning.  That cool air is making for a delightful day from the Great Lakes to the Northeast.  There is enough of a chill in the air to require sweaters and jackets despite it still being August.

Alas, as we all know, the August fronts down South just become fronts with drier air as the chill is quickly moderated.  I was golfing today with marvelous Marvin Bernstein, and we noted it was hot, but we weren't sweating.  That's because slightly drier air has filtered over us, brought down by the NW upper flow.

With the water Temps of Lake Pontchartrain around 90, the South Shore doesn't feel the niceness as much as the North Shore.  Should be another good feel morning tomorrow & Thursday before the muggies return.  The Gulf still has some clusters of storms, but there are no signs of any swirls forming.

Better still, the only storm is Fernand moving way out into the Atlantic with nothing except a weak wave moving through the Caribbean.  Even the wide view of the Atlantic has nothing.

If you focus on the eastern Atlantic, you can still see the Saharan Dust blowing westward off of Africa.

The tighter view does indicate several waves over Africa, but no model picks up on anything developing during the next 10-14 days.  That gets us well into September when, according to Jim Cantore on TWC this morning, the MJO will go into the favorable (rising air) phase over our part of the world.  We are just getting to the most active part of our hurricane season, and it's why you should sign up/subscribe to my new podcast at bobbreck.com.

For just $2/month, you can get me on your phone or laptop wherever you are.   It won't always be about weather, as tomorrow I will record a podcast with former Chief Meteorologist David Bernard talking about post-Katrina/Ida PTSD.  He's still helping people deal with severe weather, but in a different way.  You can't see or hear that podcast unless you subscribe.  Future guests are planned, but for the next 6-8 weeks, our focus will be on hurricanes.

For now, enjoy the brief, less humid air.  Stay tuned!
