Oh Wow, In Your Life Have You Seen Anything Like That?!!! The Dance of Imelda & Humberto

The above quote came from Verne Lundquist at the 2005 Master tournament when Tiger Woods made an unbelievable chip shot.  It could be used again today to describe what none of us has seen before.  Two strong tropical systems coming close (590 miles) to each other just off the Eastern U.S. coastline.  Models are indicating we'll see the "Fugiwhara effect" (storms rotate around each other) that will keep both from impacting the U.S. coastline. It happens often in the western Pacific (WPAC) basin, but not in the Atlantic.

The top color IR view has Humberto (right) weakening with Imelda (left) becoming better organized.  Computer models and NHC thinking has not changed taking both away from the U.S.  We begin with Humberto on top with Imelda on bottom.

The reason neither storm can move westward is clearly seen on the Water Vapor view. The axis of an upper trough is over Florida steering Imelda northward.  She will make the sharp right turn tomorrow as Humberto gets closer.  Nothing but dry air is west of the trough.

Speaking of dry air, look at the Gulf.  We still can see a low level swirl, but it lacks and T-Storms around it.

The infrared indicates zero T-Storms around the swirl, but wave heights are 3-4 feet+ just to the west of the center.  No model develops this system so NHC doesn't mention it.  Something to watch.  Which brings me back the the quote above.  In your life have you ever seen the Gulf & Caribbean so quiet during the heart/peak of hurricane season?

Sure we have seen 9 named storms, but besides Barry down over the southern Gulf, the northern Gulf has seen no threats.  The Caribbean too has seen zero storms this summer.  It shows you LOCATION matters and NOT the number of storms.

We still have 3-4 weeks to go before I'll bring in the "Fat Lady" to sing.  It's another reason to subscribe to my new podcast before a Gulf threat happens. For $2/month (7 cents a day) you'll get my discussion/opinion during a threat, plus I'll have great guests that you don't want to miss.  Coming up soon, The Weather Channel's Jim Cantore.  Go sign up at bobbreck.com.

As October nears, most of us are looking for cooler air.  Not happening anytime soon as we have no fronts around.

During the hot summer of 1980, we still had 90+ heat through oct. 10th.  The cooldown later this week will be from increasing rain chances & not a cold front.  Finally,

The Canadian model is still trying to form something down over the Yucatan & Bahamas in the 8-10 day time frame.  Many models have tried to do that this summer, but nothing ever happened.  What is going on in the Gulf & Caribbean that's limiting any development?  Answer?  We don't care, just get the cold fronts coming!  Stay tuned!
