Hurricane Dolly nearing Coast...

Dolly was upgraded to a Cat. 1 Hurricane this afternoon at the 4pm advisory. Satellite loops tonight indicate she has not become much stronger and with her forward motion towards the NW at 10-12 mph, Dolly is running out of time for any rapid intensification. The lower Texas coast will see lots of rain & some strong winds tomorrow, but this is certainly not a Katrina type storm. Even though it is 500 miles from New Orleans, coastal waters west of the mouth of the Mississippi River are rocking with seas 6-9 feet. Fortunately the impacts on SE Louisiana will be minimal. Still, this system should remind us to have our plans & supplies ready as we head towards the heart of the 2008 hurricane season.

It appears the next several days will have no new tropical systems threaten us. I'll feel much better once Dolly gets inland tomorrow. Often when hurricanes approach land they sometimes slow down & stall. No signs of Dolly doing that tonight.
