In case you missed it...USA Today had a story from researchers at Florida State that said..." the 2007 & 2008 hurricane seasons had the LEAST tropical activity in the Northern Hemisphere in 30 years." How can that be you ask when all we keep hearing is that Global Warming is making for more numerous & intense hurricanes? That's because it's not true regarding GW. Granted, where we live (the Atlantic Basin) storm activity remains above the long term normals/averages, but IF global warming was the cause of that increase, one would expect increase activity in ALL basins...and that is not happening according to the Florida State scientists. Could it be that Dr. Bill Gray's theory of increased hurricane activity is due to cycles in ocean currents and not due to GW? The FSU study seems to confirm Dr. Gray's theory.
The cold is still coming for this weekend, although today's computer runs have backed off somewhat on the strength of the chill keeping the core of the cold to our north & east. Still, near freezing temps. will occur on the NorthShore both Sunday & Monday mornings.

I think the problem with verifying global warming is that we have only been able to track global weather patterns for a relatively short time. You can't really compare a modern global measurement with an English diary from the 1600s that describes a very cold winter and say that this is proof for global warming.
Michael Crichton's book State of Fear makes good points for and against global warming. In an appendix he points out many of the contradictory statements made for and against global warming.
We live in a technological world where computers and software can be a double edge sword of good and evil....its allows us to track hurricanes with more pinpoint accuracy then ever before...although not perfect sceince. (Did you see anyone dress as the "Cone of Uncertainty" for Halloween!)
But then we have people who use technology for monitary and political gain and use such imformation to scare the public into thinking that we alone are causing global warming...
And my question is how do these people become authority figures on such topics...and worse how do they convince so many people to believe them that they will pass taxes to try to stop global warming from happening...
I didn't see them or a tax stopping Ike or Gustav in its tracks...
Always liked the line from George Carlin when he spoke about such a topic...he said, the world will be he long after we are dead and gone...
Ah now Bob don't mess with our cold fronts....I want cold air for the weekend...
