Hello Summer...Officially !

As we all know, "meteorological" summer began June 1st. Astronomical Summer begins Monday at 6:28 AM. If you have lived here for many years, you know it'll be hot every day & it will rain somewhere every day. It's rare for cold fronts to get close so our main triggers are 1) daytime heating, 2) sea breeze/lake breeze interaction and 3) tropical systems. Which brings me to my pet peeve...the 7 day forecast in the summer...what a waste. Back when we had the 5 day forecast, I would shorten it to 3 days during June thru August. However, consultants informsed the station that the public wants the long range prediction. Never mind that there is little skill beyond 3 days...if they want it, we must provide it. So there it is on every station, night after night...hot, humid with spotty showers. A real public service!

3 weeks into the hurricane season and still no storms. Unusual? Not at all, in fact typically June is quiet and so is July. Our real season kicks in August thru September into early October. So early quiet is nice, but it doesn't mean it'll stay that way. We do have several storms in the Pacific but only several waves in the Caribbean. This quiet time in the Gulf is just what we need to allow maximum clean up operations of the Gulf oil leak. Just get the damn thing capped before the storms start coming.

Hot weather with a chance for daily afternoon showers and T-storms expected for the rest of the week here in NOLA.

I would advise all of you to keep a weary eye on the W. Caribbean Sea as we head later into this week where there are strong indications that something will form. Stay tuned!

7-day forecast is no big deal unless the forecaster lacks confidence in his/her accuracy. Most people would prefer to have and idea of what may be expected the following week with the weather. Think of the 7-day forecast as job security as pretty anyone with or without a meteorology degree that has a basic understanding or interest in weather could issue a 3-day forecast. Just issuing a 3 day would be taking the easy road.

Oh silly CAVEMAN...a man of your intelligence surely knows that forecasting is based on beating daily CLIMATOLOGY. If CLIMO says each day will have a high of 92 and a 40% chance of rain, I say unless we have a tropical system coming, no one can beat CLIMATOLOGY beyond 3 days. It's not the easy road, it's just REALITY.
