Unprecedented River Flooding...

The NWS is forecasting "historic...and in some cases record breaking..." river crests on many rivers during the next 2-3 weeks. Notice they did not use the word "unprecedented". Must be something wrong with them?!!! The River Forecast Center upped the crest stage at the Carrollton gage in New Orleans by 2 1/2 feet to 19.5' on May 24th. That crest is based on the full opening of the Bonne Carre spillway. Since our river levees protect us to 20+ feet, my feeling is the Corps of Engineers will also open the Morganza Spillway to ease the pressure on the levees both here and in Baton Rouge. The last time the Morganza Spillway was opened was 38 years ago.

Weather wise, changes are coming as Friday will be the last of the good feel days. Gulf muggies will be back by Saturday and that'll mean the summer time feel once again. There are signs of yet another cold front coming late next weekend.

Of course they didn't use the word "unprecedented", they are not in a competition with anyone else for news ratings...

Your title is "unprecendented river flooding", so are you saying this event is unprecendented?

un·prec·e·dent·ed

–adjective
without previous instance; never before known or experienced; unexampled or unparalleled: an unprecedented event.
