Irene vs Katrina ?

Have several requests regarding comparing Irene to Katrina. So far, Katrina is clear winner. Lowest Pressure Katrina 902 mb, Irene 942...highest winds Katrina 175 mph, Irene 125. Highest wave heights Katrina 55', Irene 42'. Irene is getting bigger tonight and could approach Katrina's size. The difference is Katrina went over the "loop current" which is warmer than the "Gulf Current" that goes up Florida's east coast to off the Carolinas. NHC weakens Irene before landfall on Saturday while Joe Bastardi says Irene will stay strong(Cat3-4). There has been a slight jog to the east tonight but NHC believes that is just a "wobble". More wobbles to the right would keep the eye (and eyewall) offshore so land areas would be spared the brunt of the storm. Even so, torrential rains will cause extensive flooding. High winds will bring down many trees so massive power outages are likely. The media are hyping Irene, but I don't blame them as people need to be aware of what might come and not say..."why didn't they tell us it was going to be this bad?" Yo...they're telling you that, but as always, some won't listen. TD 10 may become TS Jose, but he will not affect land areas. Mr. Bastardi's "frenzy" appears to take a break after Irene, but there's still September to go. Stay tuned!

Weak front will bring lower humidities for weekend. Slightly cooler N-Shore at night.

Thanks for the update, Bob! Keeping fingers (and toesies) crossed that we will be safe for the rest of the season. Prayers are with our friends to the East. Maybe it'll wobble and it won't be too bad. Here's hoping!

Hey Bob,
I heard a speech by the former New Orleans City Councilman Oliver Thomas about people staying after the warnings of Katrina. The story goes something like this;

A old man in the city was told by the NOPD that he should evacuate and the man said,” I have faith in God as he will protect me.” The storm came and the waters rose and the NOFD came by in a boat and said to the man you need to evacuate the waters are rising. The old man said,” I have faith in God as he will protect me.” The water continued to rise and as the man was clinging to a tree a Coast Guard helicopter tried to rescue the man and he waved them off yelling,” I have faith in God as he will protect me.” Soon after the man drowned, as he got to Heaven the man was very angry at God, he yell I had faith in You why would you let me die! God said back to the man, I tried to save you. Three times you ignored my attempts, who do you think since the police to warn you? Who do you think sent the fire department to recue you? Who do you think sent the Coast Guard?

So hopefully those people along the east coast will take the warnings seriously and leave.

Media should hype this storm, when was the last time a major hurricane of this size hit the east coast or hit New York?

Poor New York, just got hit with an earthquake, now a hurricane.

November can't get here soon enough!
