With all the media hype(justifiably so), I hope Irene doesn't take a jog and move far enough offshore to keep her main impacts minimal. I can already hear the screams of the public..."media over hype, over kill, over warn yada, yada". This storm has not done what NHC predicted intensity wise. However, it remains a large system that will produce torrential rainfall (5-8") and a storm surge that will produce widespread coastal flooding. If Irene doesn't scare the folks that have prepared for her, next time they will likely ignore the warnings of local officials and NHC forecasts. We know the uncertainty of hurricanes. Remember the double loop of Juan in 1985, how Danny stalled over Mobile Bays (43" of rain!) and TS Allison drenched Houston (40+"). Yep, we have experience. We understand the dangers. I still believe Irene will live up to her hype. But if she doesn't, I hope the public understands the difficulty in predicting tropical system landfalls 5-10 days in advance.
Enjoy a very hot and mostly dry weekend as highs around 100 will remind us we're still in August. I know several models are hinting at a Gulf storm in 2 weeks. Please, just enjoy your weekend and pray for our friends dealing with Irene.

Didn't we hear two weeks ago that a system would possibly threaten the Gulf in two weeks? Talk about hype and crying wolf.....
Bob, I heard that one model has a system heading straight for us exactly three years and twenty-one days from now. Any thoughts on the accuracy of this model?
I like these comments.. Wish they were all like this,lol.. I know you have to be prepared, but the East Coast has really over played Irene. A Cat 1 storm is a daily rain shower for us down here.. Not really, but geez, every news channel??
The East coast is the population center. Sorta of unusual to have a hurricane up there. So they are going to go overboard on the coverage. There is some Tstorms down South of Puerto Rico that bear watching.
Hurricane is a big deal for New York area's and media should provide lots of coverage. Do you think if we got 3 feet of snow the media would go overboard?
