It's the Intensity Stupid !

Yea, maybe James Carville had it right regarding the economy. But truth be told, NHC has a very difficult time forcasting the intensity of Hurricanes. Cudos to them for locking into the track which has been pretty much right on at 3 days out. However, the models have been out to lunch regarding the intensity forecasts. It is curious that the pressure values remain low while the observed winds reported have not been as high. Don't have an explaination for that. Have the media over hyped? I don't think so. They may not get the winds 1st predicted, but Irene is a prolific rain maker and amount of 5-10+ will be common resulting in widespread flooding. Storm surge is likely to be less than predicted and many folks will feel the media over warned the public to enhance their ratings. Hard to argue either way. Is it a "Monster Storm" like the network news describe it? Hardly. but this is a major storm that could have been worse. Do you error on the side of caution? When so many people are at risk, I say yes. I'm just glad it isn't us under the gun this time.

Have you been out tonight? Yea, it's still warm, but the dew points have fallen into the 60s and it just doesn't feel so bad. It'll be hot again on Sunday, but the humidity will be lower again. Enjoy your weekend and forget about those goofy models talking about a storm in the Gulf 10-12 days way.

Where did Jose come from? Last night before I went to bed, the Hurricane center said it had 0% chance to become anything. This morning when I woke up, it was a tropical storm. Who is predicting this stuff?

Would you please advise on the brush fires and the inhalation hazards to the westbank/metro area if any? TY!

Richard...blame it on technology as today's modern satellites don't miss any swirl out there. This afternoon sat. loop shows Jose to have a well defined circulation, but it's center is exposed, meaning there are no T-storms around it. Moving out to sea so forget about it.

Tracey: Like with any forest fire, those who have lung problems should not expose themselves to this smoke. As the winds shift on Tuesday, the smoke will blow back over the city exposing many more to that bad air.
