Freeze coming?

NWS has a "Hard Freeze Watch" up for the North Shore for Sunday AM with a light freeze possible south of Lake P. as the coldest air of the season is pouring out of eastern Canada. My thinking is the computer guidance is too cold. Why? 1) we don't have a snow cover except far to the north and 2) Lake Pontchartrain's water temps is near 60, way warmer than than normal after a very warm January. Since the trough diving down over the Great Lakes is NOT forecasted to dig southward into the Gulf but turn eastward rather quickly by Sunday...I feel the core of this cold will stay just to our north & east. Regardless, you'll need to protect your tender plants as those cold, strong north winds will dehydrate them very quickly. At least this weekend will be dry as the rain threat is gone for now.

Looking ahead, I do not like the pattern shift that appears to brings fast moving disturbances quickly across the southern tier of states. In addition, the SW upper flow re-establishes itself late next week creating a potential forecasting nightmare for next weekend's parades. Even Mardi Gras looks stormy. Bummer! Stay tuned!

Enjoy your weekend...near the fireplace or under a warm blanket.
