January Thaw

When I was a young fella growing up in NW Indiana, I recall many Winters that got real cold in December into January almost always had a warmer spell that old timers called “the January Thaw”.  It would last 7-10 days and then the deep freeze returned.   It appears that is what is happening across most of the country today.  The brutal Arctic chill has retreated as milder Pacific air flows in from the West blocking any immediate return of the frigid cold.   We’ll see another front sweep thru us before dawn on Saturday bringing some over night showers, but it appears the timing will make for a beautiful January weekend of sunny skies & comfy cool temps.  Wish that was the case for the Saints in Seattle!   Heavy rain is likely at game time  (FOX 8 Sat. 3:25 PM) with SW winds 15-25 gusting to 30+!   Bummer.

In the short term, low clouds & fog will give way to some sunny breaks on Friday.  Highs could warm to 70+ with only a slight chance for a late shower.  Rain chances increase after 10 PM with many a rumble of thunder, but showers should be gone by daybreak on Saturday.
