With today's "sleet storm", it marked the 3rd time this Winter we have seen frozen precipitation. Heck, last Winter we didn't even have one day of freezing temps. But cold is relative to where you live. For instance, Denver is now 50 straight hours (and counting) of being below ZERO. Chicago is nearing 20 days of below zero. Many cities in the Northeast have gone through all of their salt supply with 6-8 weeks left in their snow season. If you are older than 50, you have lived this before as the Winters of the 60s,70s & 80s were brutal. Our current cycle of Polar Vortex cold outbreaks should continue for the next 10-14 days, but there is hope around the corner. The daily higher sun angle will start working it's magic by the end of the month resulting in weaker cold outbreaks and a warming southern tier of states. I can still see Winter lingering over the Great Lakes through March & April with warmer temps arriving in May. There is talk that a cold Winter means an active Hurricane Season, but I have found no data to support that claim.
Our next fast moving disturbance is racing across California into Arizona. it will bring us increasing clouds Friday PM with some cold showers Friday night into early Saturday & Sunday look dry & a little warmer.

Hey Bob! I've been a long time follower of your blog for several years. I know you don't like to speculate about events to far out but, I've been wondering about Spring.
Has there been enough snowfall in the North to raise the river significantly when the Spring thaw comes? Do you think there might be a chance the spillway will have to be opened? I'm just curious.
