Despite the headlines calling for a double whammy from 2 hurricanes, reality shows once again never let facts get in the way of a good story. Hurricane Iselle weakened into a Tropical Storm before reaching the big island of Hawaii and Hurricane Julio turned to the north away from the Islands. But fear not, the news media had everyone running to the stores and "hunkering down" despite the fact history has shown all hurricanes weaken BEFORE they reach Hawaii and the really bad storms ALWAYS come up from the SSW. Let's not minimize the impact of 12-14" of rain and 50-60 mph winds. There were some power outages and some flooding, however, the hype was far worse than need be. Let's remember that the next time a hurricane comes into the Gulf. Prepare us...sure. Scare us...for shame. It's kind of like tonight's "Super" Moon ( which we won't see because of clouds). Back in my youth, it was just a BIGGER moon. Now days it's SUPER. Everything is called SUPER like it's never happened before. SUPER Typhoon (Cat. 4 & 5), SUPER Moon (Bigger), SUPER Storm Sandy (Nor'easter). Hype,Hype, Hype. Boo.
Today was obviously a much wetter day for most folks. I watched the earlier news and neither station's weathercaster explained why. It appears the upper ridge (high pressure) is retreating back to the west with another east coast trough developing that should increase our daily rain chance. Hopefully that will get out highs back to near 90 instead of the mid to upper 90s. The Tropical Atlantic remains quiet. Stay tuned!
