As we near the end of the hottest 10 days of the year, I realize this Summer SO FAR has not been that hot. Normally we should have reached 90+ 51 times. Today's 94 made it our 39th 90+ day, but only 2 of those 39 have been 95+. Compare that to 2011 when we already had 71 90+ days with 29 of those 71 being 95+! As an upper ridge builds over us for the reast of this week, our daily cooling showers will be well below normal coverage-wise. That should produce highs in the mid to upper 90s, the hottest stretch so far this Summer. Use common sense when being out in the heat of the day as the heat index will jump into the danger range between 12 & 5 PM.
Tropical Storm Bertha is racing to the NE away from the U. S. The Tropical Atlantic is quiet for this 1st week in August, however the MJO is heading into the favorable (rising air) stage so we'll need to pay attention for the next 20-30 days. In the Pacific, Hurricane Iselle has weakened but is expected to bring some heavy rains to Hawaii on Thursday & Friday. Right behind her is Julio which could bring more rains to the islands over the weekend.
