Florence to Form...

Satellite loops show a well-defined circulation has moved off of Africa and NHC is calling it “Potential Tropical Cyclone # 6”.   Models show it becoming a hurricane, but it curves northward into the open waters of the central Atlantic harming no one.    A strong wave is pushing through Puerto Rico and Hispaniola, but there is too much wind shear to allow any development in the near term.  Most models are not showing any real development even when it moves into the Gulf next week.  However, it will likely bring even greater rain chances for us which we don’t need.  My house has had nearly 6 1/2 “ of rain in the past 4 days.  The pattern we are in keeps rain chances elevated right on through the weekend.  Add in a tropical wave or two and we really will be “Mildew City”.  You know we’ve had too much rain when the mushrooms begin sprouting all over the place.

The Gulf tonight has clusters of storms with no organization.  Buoys over the eastern Gulf did have pressure falls from yesterday, but those pressures have risen during the past several hours.   Wind speeds and wave heights are slowly increasing making offshore waters rough.   While all the attention is focused out in the Atlantic, we need to watch for something to pop in the Gulf as the MJO goes into the favorable (rising air) phase during the next 7-10 days.   If I haven’t said it enough, I’m tired of August.  One more day left.  Hopefully September won’t be a month to remember?  Stay tuned!
