First off, there will be no tropical threats in the Gulf for the next 5-7 days. All the action will be elsewhere. Florence appears to be regaining her strength tonight and models project her to be a major hurricane that will impact the East Coast somewhere between Charleston on up through the Carolinas early next week. Anyone planning a trip for next week to any of the big cities from Washington to Boston could see significant travel impacts, so be prepared. Florence could bring terrible flooding along with extensive beach damage. Get ready for the media to go nuts in coverage as Florence approaches.
Behind Florence is Isaac and Helene, both systems predicted to become hurricanes. Helene is expected to turn northward into the central Atlantic affecting only shipping. Isaac could impact the Windward islands in 4-5 days on a track much farther south than Florence. Way too soon to know if he’ll ever reach the Gulf in 10-12 days. The MJO (Madden-Julian Oscillation) is forecasted to begin going into the Unfavorable (sinking air) phase by then and that could mean Isaac will not be a problem. Again, way, way too early to know what will become of Isaac.
Locally, a weak front will stagger into our neighbor for Monday-Wednesday giving us above normal clouds and showers. No it will not push through before it dissipates later next week. Our focus needs to be on the Saints tomorrow. Saints 26 Tampa 17. Who Dat! Stay tuned!
