Back when I started in broadcasting (1971 WTVT Ch. 13 Tampa), we didn't have computer graphics able to show models, satellite loops to follow weather features, nor the capability to show radar animation. My Chief Meteorologist Roy Leep was the first to develop radar animation, but it was not real time. Fast forward to now and weathercasters have everything at their finger tips, like numerical guidance out to 7 days that can show an approaching freeze.
Guidance is calling for mid to upper 20s next Wednesday for ASD (Slidell) and low to mid 30s for MSY (Kenner). From What I'm seeing, those numbers are the worse case scenario as there are hints that a Gulf low will develop along the northern Gulf late Tuesday bringing us a cold rain shield with temps in the 40s South Shore. The cold will come in several waves with the first front bringing us some showers this PM and over night followed by much colder temps for Friday as highs will stay in the 50s. Saturday will be great if you're dressed for it (60s) with Sunday & Monday warming back into the 70s before the bottom falls out for next week. You can find the front on satellite, radar and especially with current temperatures.
Also, it appears sub-tropical moisture is feeding in from the Pacific. With much colder air settled across the northern states and Canada, We will need to pay attention in case the eastern upper trough sharpens bringing that cold down to us next week. Right now, models say it will.
As I mentioned yesterday, I will use this weekend to bring my tropical potted plants into my heated back shed and look around to find the faucet coverings that I'll need in a couple of weeks. For my in ground plants, I'll cover around them with leaves from my 3 large trees. We have time to get ready for the chill. Stay tuned!
