Rising Mississippi Nearing Crest...

I was out fishing today with Capt. Hylton and, after a gloomy Monday, we knew the bright sunshine should get the fish more active.  Wow, were we right as we had our 50 trout limit by the noon hour thanks to a falling tide.    This has been our best trip in a long time since the opening of the Spillway last year basically shut down catching speckle trout.  That's why I'm nervous again as the Mississippi is back way too high and will crest above 16 feet this weekend at the Carrollton gage.
Fortunately, the River is falling upstream into the Ohio Valley and that should allow our levels to drop 3-4 feet over the next 2-3 weeks.  That all depends on no more heavy rainfall/snowfall up north.
We do have several fast moving systems racing coast to coast with the next one bringing us some showers overnight into early Wednesday.

Another system will bring more showers on Friday with a stronger system coming early next week.  No real cold air is over the south with the super cold lingering way north in Canada and Alaska.

The second week in February could see the bitter cold plunge our way, but that is too far out to have any real confidence in the forecast.   For now, let's continue to enjoy our mild January and hope Mardi Gras doesn't go into the deep freeze.  Stay tuned!
