My Yard Is Ready For Cristobal...

I spent the past hour cutting my palm tree closest to our house and moved most of my potted plants up close to the house and shed.  If this were a hurricane, I would have moved the plants into the shed and taken all patio furniture back along the side of the house outside the wind field.  In addition, I would have closed my functional shutters, but that is not necessary since the latest info says Cristobal is not strengthening.

As you can see, I had a helper, our Westie Bailey. (Yea, she knows she's cute!)  So I feel prepared especially since what I'm seeing is a system that is having problems.  The following satellite pictures show you what I mean.  The top pic  has the dry air wrapping around Cristobal exposing the center with no storms around it.

More importantly (and no one is talking about it), the heaviest (reds & yellow colors) band of storms on the east side is moving AWAY to the NE from the center of circulation.  That to mean says the threat for heavy rainfall has shifted to our east and we are unlikely to see those 6-10" totals previously predicted.

Usually in a developing storm that is lopsided, the heavy rain band on the east side rotates back around to the west, but that is not happening with Cristobal.   This system has been remarkably well behaved and NHC hasn't changed their forecasted track with the centerline moving over Port Fourchon to Houma to Baton Rouge.

So unless Cristobal has a rapid intensification before landfall (no model shows this), I believe the local impacts will be minor.  Note how far away from the center of Cristobal (south of the Louisiana coast) the band of heaviest rain has wandered to the east.  In fact, the west coast of Florida may see greater impacts than where Cristobal makes landfall!   Those are traits of a sub-tropical or winter-like system instead of a tropical storm.  Most of our local weathercasters only point out things NHC tells them about or the models show them.  It's times like this I truly miss broadcasting.  Next update around 10 PM. Stay tuned!

Thanks for keeping your blog going and always giving us "the rest of the story", instead of the same repetitive info someone typed up for you! My family and friends get tired of "Bob said"

Thank you Bob. I always enjoy your take on things. I'm in Shoreline Park, Bay St Louis ready for some flooding.

Bob - you keep doing what you do. A bunch of us still rely on you for your vast experience doing times like this. And you are correct the locals just repeat what they hear we need someone who tells us what they think that's what you always did and that's why I watch you for so many years and still read your blog. Thanks
