You Can Fool Some of the People...

Today is the final day of the 2020 Hurricane Season, one that has seen the most number of named storms ever.  However, it doesn't come close to the most extreme/destructive seasons since 1966.

The ACE (Accumulated Cyclone Energy) index is a much better gauge in determining a storm's power and 2020 doesn't come close to the Katrina year of 2005.   What bothers me is the headline in USA Today.

Huh?  No one predicted?  For sure, no one predicted the total number of named storms, BUT almost all early season forecasts called for an active season, with some using the word "hyperactive."   Look at what my friend Joe Bastardi of WeatherBell Analytics issued back in March.

Does that sound like "no one predicted?"   Joe later revised upward the number of named storms (18-24) by early August, but I guess you can say no one came close to the final # 30.   Just thought the headline was slightly misleading in that everyone knew 2020 would be way above the averages/normals.

Cold air is pouring down into the Gulf around a deep east coast snowstorm.  You can see the cold air "streamers" down over the Gulf as the air temps in the 50s moves over the 70+ warmth of the northern Gulf.

While snow is falling as far south as north Alabama, warm air (65-70) surging up the east coast is creating some severe weather with Tornado Watches in effect.  For us, we'll see a light freeze on the North Shore tomorrow with 40s south.  Notice how dry (dew points in the 20s & 30s) the air is.   With bright sunshine on Tuesday, highs will quickly warm into the 50s & with less wind it will feel great.

With the big rain/snow storm along the East coast, the West keeps waiting for their rainy season to kick in.  So far, that is not happening.  At my house, 6.19" of rain fell during the past 4 days.  That was great for my garden & potted plants.  Also great was the Saints win yesterday.  Sure Denver was handicapped, but a win is a win.  Bundle up tonight, but Tuesday will be terrific!   Stay tuned!
