Heading For A Record...

In sports, breaking a record is usually a good thing & often translates into winning a game, a tournament or just the lowest round ever in golf.   However, in weather, being number one is often NOT a good thing, like breaking the all time record wettest April for instance.

As of noon, MSY's rain total sits at 11.61" making this the 7th wettest on the above list, right behind numbers 5 & 6.   The clouds and rain are keeping us chilly as our normal/average highs for late April approach 80.  That won't happen anytime soon.  But if the NWS predictions come true for future rainfall today, we could easily jump into the top 5.  heck, if any training develops, we could jump to number one as we are just 4.51" short of that record with 2 weeks left in April.

As I pointed out yesterday, we are locked in an upper pattern that has a large upper high centered along the West Coast with upper troughs on either side.   Note on the satellite views how clear it is out west and how the snow pack shows up.

These are stunning views since the West coast often is socked in with low clouds and rain during April.  To the east of the upper high are clouds and rain/snow.

The snow pictures were taken by my son (Rob) in Longmont, Colorado this morning after 3-4" of the white stuff.   That stream of moisture keeps following the same track out of the Rockies, joining the sub-tropical southern stream of moisture dumping round after round of rain along the northern Gulf Coast.   We need to see the clouds and rain return to Seattle & Portland that will signal an upper air pattern chance.  Hopefully that happens after Saturday?

Until then, expect more rounds of rain as we head towards record territory for April rainfall.

This is not just a Louisiana problem as much of the nation is cool, wet & ugly.   Let's pay attention for the rest of this afternoon and over night to see where these next rounds of storms set up.  Right now, it appears the North Shore has the better chance to receive the heaviest rains , but that could change.  I might post again late this afternoon if I see something new.  Stay tuned!
