Summer Makes A Comeback...

During the month of October, the hours of daylight decrease by 51 minutes from the 1st through 31st.  With the longer nights and lower sun angle, climatology tells us it gets colder, especially after the 20th of the month.   Not happening yet so far as the 1st week is making it "Hot-tober"!  And for the next 7 days, we'll be flirting with 90.

So where's the cold air?  Go west young man/woman.  Their rainy season is beginning to kick in with snow falling at higher elevations.  Parts of Wyoming could get 2-3 FEET of snow during the next 5 days.  Even more cold is building up north.

But the cold air over Canada and Alaska can't come into the lower 48 until we get a big dip in the Jet stream over the Great Lakes and Northeast.  Right now we have a weakening upper low north of Chicago with the main jet stream farther north.  Models are not showing any dip coming for the next 10-14 days which could result in this being the warmest October ever!

The surface map has no strong fronts anywhere except just along the Carolina coasts.  We do have drier air over us that is making it feel better, but the dry air heats up quickly under mostly sunny skies.  If you want some cold air, you'll have to travel out west.

The Gulf and Caribbean remain quiet with only a small area along the East Coast shaded in for possible development.  Hopefully, we are finished with any tropical threats to the northern Gulf coast for the rest of this season.  Our current dry spell is just what all the repairmen/women need to get folks back into their homes.  For some, that is still weeks & months away.  Stay tuned!
