When The Weather Is Boring, You Need To be Creative...

During my 45 years in broadcasting, I always tried to make the weather interesting and informative, even when , or especially when the weather was not.  We have been in such a situation this week as we have a huge upper ridge locked over the West Coast with a weak trough over the Great Lakes.  This has kept the east cool with the western states mild to warm.

So instead of showing the same old maps each day, I salute those weathercasters who become creative and present us some graphics that are out of the ordinary.  These graphics I grabbed from Zack Fradella's morning programs.

I think most of us thought this has been a really cold spell after a record warm December.   But Zack found that compared to last year, we have not been as cold.   Days below 50 and nights lower than 40 were greater LAST YEAR.  Yes, our average temp. this year (56.4) is below normal, but it's one degree higher (warmer) than last Winter so far.  Fortunately, the last graphic shows we are beyond the coldest part of Winter as we head towards Spring.  This is what I mean about being creative AND informative when there's not much going on.  So watch what weathercasters show you the radar when there are no clouds in the sky!  Duh!

We really don't have much going on as the next 2 days will continue to be sunny & dry.  However, there are changes coming for this weekend.

Lots of cold air remains over Canada, and as Bruce Katz showed, another dip in the jet stream will bring that chill our way by late on Saturday.  Very little precipitation is expected as the Gulf moisture is limited.

For Thursday & Friday, the weather will be near perfect with bright sunshine, chilly mornings but mild to warm afternoons.  I did bring in my hanging baskets last night before I went to sleep as there was some frost around this morning.

NWS is not predicting it to be as chilly for Thursday AM.  Note the next 7 days have a strong front plowing through late Saturday, but the cooldown will be brief as we're back to 70+ by next Wednesday.

To show you how bored I am, I went looking at the close up satellite view to see if more fires (arrows) developed.  Yep, found a bunch.  My sub-conscious self tells me..."Get a life!"   Stay tuned!
