Weekend Tornadoes Were Destructive, Damaging & Deadly

I've been near really bad tornadoes (Xenia, Ohio 1974) during my lifetime, but fortunately, I've never been in the tornado damage zone.  I lived in Kettering, Ohio back then and the Xenia F5 tornado was 25 miles away. I remember seeing the damage of whole neighborhoods "not dere no more."  On this past Saturday, such a destructive tornado crashed into Clarksville, TN leaving nothing but slabs where homes once stood.  The video from The Weather Channel was stunning.

The bottom graphic shows how all the warnings were north of us with the red boxes being the tornado warnings.  I often wonder how you can survive such damage when/if you home doesn't have a basement?   I salute the SPC (Storm Prediction Center) for their outstanding forecast several days in advance.  They nailed where the greatest threat would be.  As we get deeper into December and the cold air dominates, the severe threat should lessen until next year when the battle begins anew as warmer air surges northward and the colder air retreats  I don't see any real cold air coming to us in the 7-10 period as the super cold (30-40 below) air has yet to appear over Alaska or northern Canada.

The bottom satellite view indicates a mainly west to east flow over the southern states.  That will keep the core of the cold air to our north.  However, changes are coming from the sub-tropical jet stream.

As the upper disturbance over Mexico approaches the western Gulf late week, surface low pressure will form.  Depending on that development and future location, our weather for Friday & Saturday looks dreary.  Too soon to know what that means in terms of rain impacts.  One thing for sure, it will be cool & windy.

Today's sunshine will not be as bright tomorrow as high, thin clouds will filter some of that sunlight.  With mostly clear skies over night, temps could be colder than this mornings lows.

The top graphic shows the pronounced Lake effect on the South Shore this morning.  That might not be the case tomorrow.

I'm going to try & golf with Marvin Bernstein tomorrow, but we won't tee off until after the noon hour.  I know many of you enjoy the cooler weather, but I just don't like the cloudy days that come with Winter.  Stay tuned!
